9/4/07 Updates

Here are our updates for the day...well, the past couple of days.

Yesterday morning, Everett popped a hole in his right lung and they had to suction off 75cc of air off of his chest. But, they were hopeful that it was a one time occurrence. They think he just got worked up and rubbed against his ventilator and created a hole in his lung. So, they laid him on his right side to try to keep his right lung from inflating too much.

They went ahead and took him off of the ventilator as planned yesterday morning around 10 a.m. and hooked him up to some oxygen via one of those little tubes under his nose like the old people at the mall wear. By yesterday afternoon, they had removed that as well. So, he is breathing on his own for now.

Last night, they took his arterial line out. It had started to come out on its own, and he really didn't need it anymore, so they went ahead and removed it.

So, if you're keeping track, by this morning the only tubes that he had left were his chest tube and his feeding tube.

Today was a busy day for our little man. This morning he had his echo cardiogram. We have not gotten the results yet, but I am hoping that everything went well.

At 11:30 a.m. they took him down for his contrast study to see how all of the work from the 29th has held up. Everything looked good, so they went ahead and took his chest tube out. (keeping track? Now we're just down to a feeding tube)

Unfortunately, with all of the excitement, he leaked out of his lung again and they had to suck 85cc off of his chest this afternoon. So, they have are giving him fentanyl every 4 hours to keep him sedated for the next 24 hours. Hopefully that will give his lung time to fully heal.

We were hoping to be able to feed him orally tomorrow morning, but it looks like that is out until we get this lung problem under control.

As much as this kid loves to be touched, I think he's just not too thrilled about being held. :) Maybe its because right after the last time he was held they cut him open and all of this began. Who knows? I hope he'll stop throwing stuff in our way, though. Or, maybe he's just not ready to have to work for his food. Right now, every 3 hours, food just appears in his tummy. Pretty soon, he'll have to start working for it!!

I'll update more as the information becomes available.

9:02 p.m. update

The results of the echo are in. He has a moderate to large PDA (the vein coming from his heart). So, we are awaiting doctors orders to see what they are going to do about it, if anything. But, everything else looked good heartwise, so we are optimistic. If they have to operate, it is a very minor surgery (well, as minor as heart surgery can be), and the possible complications are minimal.

He is still under sedation for his lung, but if he as an event free night, we will get to hold him tomorrow!! :)
